Isn't She Lovely?

Go read Nathaniel. Kurt and I, discussing J. Gar's stunning YSL and more in a fabulous red carpet chat.

The British were coming at an event held by BAFTA last night in Los Angeles. His royal highness Prince William, who also happens to be President of BAFTA (as if being a future king wasn't cool enough...) attended with his wife, Kate Middleton. Of course, she looked stunning but I keep wondering, where the hell does she find all these wholesome looking Alexander McQueen gowns?
This lavender creation is of course the epitome of classiness but would it kill her to try something a little bit more aggressive and McQueen-ish? Those odd little hats don't count.

Mary Louise-Parker brought her relaxed hippie-ness to the royal table in this cherry Dolce & Gabbana gown. Considering it lacks some oomph for a royal shindig, it's lovely to see her preserve her quirkiness.

Excuse me for saying this but royals should be bowing down to her royal majesty of actressing Nicole Kidman. I love how with the years she's adjusting herself to more sober, but still terrific, looks and how lovely her smile has become with each passing year. This Ellie Saab gown isn't a scene-stealer but Nicole must know that at a royal party, you are not supposed to overshadow the future queen. This well thought dress and demure style make her even more majestic.

Ooh-la-la, god only knows why Blake Lively gets invited to all these amazing red carpets, or perhaps he does, and the reason is merely because she always looks fantastic. This flowy Marchesa gown goes against everything Blake has us used to. Oh no, no boobs or legs! But with the see through loveliness of the fabric and the very Marchesa embroidery she looks like a true goddess. Her simple, unkempt chignon completed a look that reminded me of a Renaissance nymph.

No words describe how magnificent this is and I won't even try.

So, there you go...

Maria Bello was all kinds of lovely in this metallic Donna Karan gown. Gotta love how her tan doesn't make the already shiny fabric look vulgar.

J. Lo probably didn't get the memo that this was a BAFTA event with Prince William and not the Grammys with will.i.am, so she showed up like she always does, flaunting her best assets.
This Emilio Pucci gown will make most women alive envy Lopez's stunning curves but is this the best she could do when she was going to be near the future Queen of England?
How do you even bow before her in this without ripping the fabric and showing Kate your luscious ass?

The Brits weren't the only place for fab fashion this week though...

Anne Hathaway was the fairy tale princess at this year's White Fairy Tale Love Ball, where she opted for a gorgeous Valentino Couture dress. The little details in this dress are best appreciated when you see it in movement, Annie looked like she was hovering while distilling pixie dust. Gotta love her bold red lipstick and romantic hairstyle. Only she can pull off sexy risque and then melt our hearts with this kind of look.

Armani Privé + Cate Blanchett = fashiongasm.

How the hell did she avoid looking like she was part of the red carpet?

This asymmetrical Chanel gown makes the lovely Diane Kruger look like she won best dressed at the 1986 Academy Awards. Make of this what you wish.

Phew, lots of looks this week huh? Can you pick a fave?

On this edition we take a glance at this week's award shows best looks.

Jennifer Garner (oh how I miss her at the Oscars) is divine in this structured Roland Mouret minidress. Nobody does architectural femininity like Mr. Mouret and his dresses are so magnificent in their simplicity that accessories aren't even that necessary because you're exploring all the amazing details in the handcraft of the gown. Brilliant.

Natalie Portman has been getting some bad reviews for this Vionett (Joan Rivers said she looked like a boy LOL) but in all fairness she does precisely the opposite of this.
This is what I imagine Audrey Hepburn to have looked like during her pregnancy!

When I first saw Jennifer Lawrence I didn't even know who she was. She's just astonishingly beautiful and this full on glamor look comes off as a total slap from the simplistic look she had in Winter's Bone. Yes, that movie is about a poor child living in the Ozarks who hunts squirrel, but then it's a testament to how good Lawrence is, that she looks older and hellishly sexy in this L'Wrenn Scott.

Look at that itty bitty baby bump! Natalie Portman is adorable in a column dress from Gianfranco Ferré for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards where she won Best Actress.
As cute as she looks and everything, I really hope that as the weeks draw closer to the Oscars, she realizes that as facile and practical it is to wear flowy dresses to hide the belly, someone with her petite figure might benefit from the tight fitting looks Heidi Klum has chosen to go for during her pregnancies. Portman is way too young to pull off the classy mini-moo moo look.

Also Armie Hammer is one fine looking gentleman. But is it me or his name is more appropriate for a porn star?

So this was last week in fashion, excited about the Globes tonight?

I love when my favorite actresses come out with superb looks and this week I have two of 'em.
First is the lovely Jennifer Garner in a floral print Zac Posen with black shoes and leggings.
This is how you do simple elegance!

Next is the iconic Sarah Jessica Parker in Halston Heritage. This dress reminds me of something Carrie Bradshaw wore once but at the same time it takes me to somewhere back in time. What Ms. Parker is doing working with the label really is a rescue of pure American fashion.
I can't see where she takes the house next.

What do you think of these two gorgeous ladies?

The luminous Gwyneth Paltrow steals the show at the Valentino archives' launch in France.
The Oscar winner chose a pale vintage design by Garavani and with a simple hair and makeup looks utterly angelical.

Whatever Marion Cotillard is eating, she definitely should sell to the rest of the world.
How she manages to look, fresh, casual and so elegant all the time is a mystery to me.
At the London premiere of Inception, the gorgeous actress donned a Thakoon, asymmetrical dress with a retro print.
Most women would've made this look like a sad attempt at hippie chic but Marion knows what she's doing.

I miss Jennifer Garner.
She's one of my favorite actresses (so undervalued after Alias was over...) so every time I see her somewhere my heart skips a beat.
This isn't owed to my eternal devotion to her but also by her beauty. For the opening of the Greenwich Casinos, the lovely Mrs. Affleck went for a violet Alberta Ferretti gown with a bare shoulder.
Notice how her simple hair seems to flow with the dress' lovely draping and the color compliments her pale skin. While the clutch looks divine, it's her thin bracelet which really puts a glorious touch to the whole look. She's a Greek goddess.

What do you think?
See anyone else look like a million bucks this week?

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past **1/2

Director: Mark Waters
Cast: Matthew McCounaghey, Jennifer Garner
Breckin Meyer, Lacey Chabert, Daniel Sunjata, Emma Stone
Robert Forster, Anne Archer, Michael Douglas

"Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" is the kind of movie that spoils itself from the trailer. Inspired by Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" it turns Scrooge into Connor Mead (McCounaghey) a Vanity Fair photographer who has made a reputation on account of his "tripod".
He beds every model he shoots and is a firm disbeliever of monogamy and love. When he goes to his young brother's (Meyer) wedding he is visited by the ghost of his uncle Wayne (Douglas), the man who trained him in his player ways.
He announces to him that he will be visited by three ghosts (past, present...you know how it goes) who all will point out to him what an ass he was by dumping the love of his life: Jenny Perotti (Garner).
Lucky for him she's maid of honor at the wedding, but before the inevitable happy ending arrives, the ghosts will unleash some actually funny situations involving alternate realities, Bridezilla tantrums (courtesy of Chabert) and that never ending source of laughs known as bad 80's fashion choices.
McCounaghey does his eternal "pecs on legs" routine (surprisingly he's never shirtless in this film) and his lecherous qualities make for some heartbreaking moments especially when the wrinkles on his face begin to show and both his characters, and the actor, learn that they might not be able to pull this off forever.
Garner can do no wrong, and she's no exception here, bringing Jenny equal parts sass and sensibility (very few actresses out there can put a lump in your throat by getting watery eyes like Jen does).
Her scenes with McCounaghey bring up the sort of flirtation that heats up a room, but we know will never be consummated, which is why the film sometimes falls flat on its face.
The supporting players are rather good; especially Forster as a tough father of the bride, Archer (can you believe she's in her sixties already?) as her foxy mom and Douglas who brings a Dino quality to uncle Wayne that makes his chauvinism somehow irresistible.
"Women are like horses" he says, cockily flashing the pearly whites and working the ascot. You will be surprised to see even your girlfriend will let out a spontaneous chuckle and then probably be pissed about it.
That's the thing with this movie, it doesn't contain life changing wisdom and knows it. It's crass, predictable, extremely cheesy sometimes, but still has some parts that work (Stone as Connor's first girlfriend is hilarious) some that are cringe worthy and some that will send you out of the theater with a huge grin on your face.
